Local rule · United StatesThe United States has no federal VAT. Sales tax is set by state and locality, from 0% to over 10%. Enter your local rate.
The formula
Gross = net × (1 + r). Net = gross / (1 + r). The tax is the difference, never the gross multiplied by the rate.
Worked example
1,000 net at 20% gives 1,200 gross. Going back, 1,200 / 1.20 = 1,000 net and 200 of tax.
How to use it
- 1Pick the direction first: adding to a net price, or stripping tax out of a shelf price.
- 2Change the rate for reduced-rate goods; the default is the standard rate only.
- 3In the United States, enter your local sales tax rate — there is no national rate.
Questions people ask
Why can't I just take 20% off a gross price?
Because the tax was added to the smaller net figure. Taking 20% off 1,200 gives 960, not 1,000. You have to divide by 1.20.
Which rate applies to my product?
Standard rates cover most goods, but food, books, transport and medicines often sit at a reduced rate. Check your tax authority's classification.
